Christoph Edelbauer
Kamptal is one of Austria's most celebrated wine regions, and Langenlois sits at its heart. Christoph Edelbauer's small, family-owned estate is quietly making some of the region's most precise wines, and in 2026 the world took notice. At the 2026 London Wine Competition, Edelbauer was named Winery of the Year – Austria. His Riesling Ried Steinhaus 2021 scored 97 points, took Double Gold, and was named Riesling of the Year by a jury of Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine, and wine buyers. His Pinot Noir 2021 also won Gold and 95 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
The vineyards have been in the family for generations, but Christoph's parents worked in science and leased the land out. When he took it back in 2003, he set out to prove that organic viticulture works — a pointed choice, since his father researched and taught conventional plant nutrition at Vienna's University of Natural Resources. The estate has been certified organic since 2012, well before organic wine went mainstream.
His roughly twelve hectares lie exclusively in and around Langenlois, on loess, gneiss, slate, and primary rock. Each site speaks differently: schist in Steinhaus, loess in Neuberg, and veins of limestone throughout. The result is wines of structure and persistence rather than power.
Alongside Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, Pinot Noir is the heart of the estate. Christoph farms three distinct Pinot sites — Spiegel, Käferthal, and Steinhaus — each with its own character.
The winery is intentionally kept small so Christoph can carry out nearly every step himself, mostly by hand. Sustainability runs throughout, from earth-cooled cellars to labels screen-printed straight onto the bottle instead of paper.

Christoph calls the 2026 grapes the most beautiful he has ever seen: small, concentrated, and intensely aromatic after a dry summer. Yields are less than half of normal, so these wines will be scarce.
