Quinta Várzea da Pedra

Nestled alongside the Atlantic northwest of its namesake city, Lisboa's slender shape is defined by the relentless winds that shape its coastal vineyards. Here, the grapes face a relentless battle to ripen, a testament to the region's unique viticultural challenges. A stone's throw of 20km inland, the landscape transforms. Shielded by a network of hills and mountains in the eastern part of Óbidos, there is reprieve from the coastal gales and you arrive at the distinctive terroir of Quinta Várzea da Pedra.

Steeped in tradition dating back to 1910, this farm has flourished through four generations, each adding layers of depth and innovation to the craft. Tomás Emídio, representing the latest generation, has been at the helm since 2015, infusing a new vision into the 15 hectares of vineyards. Under his guidance, the farm has embraced a philosophy that intertwines the best of old traditions with new inspirations. This commitment is evident in the selective bottling of production, focusing on quality and the unique character of each wine. Tomás' approach extends beyond winemaking; it encompasses dedication to organic farming and meticulous hand-harvesting practices, ensuring that each grape from vine to bottle is treated with respect.

The microclimate of Óbidos, shaped by a natural gap in the hills aligned with the Peniche Peninsula, offers an ideal setting for both white and red varieties to thrive. The region’s distinctive soil, composed of clay and chalk, coupled with the moderating influence of the Atlantic, cultivates white wines known for their bright acidity and reds that are structured, complex, and full of character. Among these, the Arinto variety shines, capturing the essence of Óbidos's unique terroir.

QVP’s viticulture and vinification ethos, guided by the principle that “good grapes make good wines,” underscores their commitment to producing wines that reflect the purity and essence of their origin. Their low-intervention approach, from handcrafted, chemical-free farming to minimal sulfur usage and natural yeast fermentation, ensures that each wine is a genuine expression of its terroir. This philosophy has not only honored the legacy of the ancestors but also set the course for future generations to continue crafting wines that embody the spirit of Lisboa and the passion of its people.
